Born in Buenos Aires, Lestido studied photography in 1979. From 1982 to 1995, she worked as a photojournalist for the dailies ''La Voz'' and ''Página/12''. In 1991, she was given a grant by the Hasselblad Foundation to photograph women with their children at Los Hornos Prison in La Plata.〔("Adriana Lestido: Women Imprisoned with their Children" ), Hasselblad Foundation. Retrieved 12 March 2013.〕 She has published her black-and-white photographs, mainly concerned with the difficulties women face in society, in photobooks including ''Madres e hijas'' (1993) and ''Mujeres presas'' (1991).
